In the past half century, the field of Eighteenth Century Studies has changed substantially, and scholarship is continually breaking new ground. This symposium encourages a conversation about new directions for study of the long eighteenth century. Four invited speakers from the fields of History and Literature will offer keynote addresses that consider the changes that have occurred in Eighteenth Century Studies since the days of Lawrence Henry Gipson, and offer their insights regarding the direction of the field today, particularly on needs and opportunities for further study. Concurrent meetings for graduate students in History and Literature, and a Roundtable Discussion invite participants to engage in the discussion. Registration for the event is free. The Gipson Institute was created by a generous gift from Lawrence Henry Gipson (1880-1971), a Pulitzer Prize-winning historian and a long-time Lehigh University Professor. As one of the most distinguished scholars in United States history, Gipson devoted his life work to teaching, researching, and passing on his knowledge to future generations. In the years since Professor Gipson’s passing, the Institute that he endowed has continued his work, advancing the field of Eighteenth Century Studies.
